Does the EU do enough to meet the tough targets for the mitigation of global warming?

Results of 31st March 2007

All over Europe and even worldwide higher temperatures could be recorded in the past winter of 2006/2007. In Malta it was definitely the warmest winter since reliable records started. Many so called snow-safe winter sports regions in the Alps suffered from much less or no sow at all.

Lately even the United Nations published a report about the change of the climate, which has to be taken very seriously. Since then the mitigation of global warming has developed to an issue that is discussed politically more often. It is even on the EU summit's agenda. EU leaders agreed that in 13 years' time, the Union's global greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide, should be reduced by at least 20 per cent and that a 20 per cent share of all energy consumption in the EU should come from renewable energy, such as wind and solar. It was also agreed that 10 per cent of all the fuel used for transport will be derived from biofuels.

The question now is: Does the EU do enough to meet those tough targets?

Between 10th and 31st March 2007 over 140 people participated in this online poll. Thank you very much!

Here the details:

157 votes were cast in this poll.

Unfortunately, there were 5 people who voted more than one time. The votes of these 4 people had to be made invalid in order to obtain a result which is more honest and true.
So the number of valid votes was 143.

Here the percentages that the various answers got:
Yes:                               33 votes   =   23,08 %
No:                               110 votes   =   76,92 %

INTERPRETATIONS:

A clear majority of voters think that the EU does not do enough to meet the tough targets for the mitigation of global warming which the EU leaders had agreed on. Just about a quarter of the voters believe that the EU is on the right track.

The editor would like to point out, that this poll is not representative for the whole country. However, it gives a clear indication anyway.

The results of this poll show that the people are aware of the situation and that the Maltese government but also the people themselves need to do more to solve this serious problem which can affect also the generations coming after us.
