Should divorce be legalised in Malta?

Results of 20th April 2007

The discussions started when the European Union brought up the subject of the harmonisation of divorce laws. Since then this hot issue has become more present in the press. Different opinions were published, be they in favour or against the introduction of divorce. In all other EU countries a divorce can be filed and is a legal instrument. But not in Malta.

Should this be changed? Should divorce be legalised in Malta?

Between 10th and 20th April 2007 well over 450 people
participated in this online poll. Thank you very much!

Here the details:

493 votes were cast in this poll.

Unfortunately, there were 14 people who voted more than one time. The votes of these 14 people had to be made invalid in order to obtain a result which is more honest and true.
So the number of valid votes was 466.

Here the percentages that the various answers got:

Yes:                                       332 votes   =   71,24 %
No:                                        134 votes   =   28,76 %

INTERPRETATIONS:

More than seven out of ten voters want divorce to be legalised in Malta.

The editor would like to point out, that this poll is not representative for the whole country. However, it gives a clear indication anyway.

This is a clear voting against the Catholic teaching and in favour of the adaption of European legislation as well as an adaption to the times that have changed.
The poll shows that a clear majority of people are in favour of divorce.
We will see what the Maltese government will do about it.
