Why didn't Malta reach the final of this year's Eurovision Song Contest?

Results of 12th May 2007

Malta's contributional song "Vertigo" sung by Olivia Lewis did very badly in this year's edition of the Eurovision Song Contest.

In the semi-final Malta reached only place 25, out of 28. Only 3 countries voted for Malta and gave just as little as 15 points.

So this year's result for Malta is even worse than last year's one. For the first time the Eurovision ended in the semi-final for Malta.

Many different reasons for this were discussed . This poll shows the most popular ones.

Why didn't Malta reach the final of this year's Eurovision Song Contest?

Between 11th and 12th May 2007 well over 250 people
participated in this online poll. Thank you very much!

Here the details:

314 votes were cast in this poll.

Unfortunately, there were 20 people who voted more than one time. The votes of these 20 people had to be made invalid in order to obtain a result which is more honest and true.
So the number of valid votes was 285.

Here the percentages that the various answers got:

Wrong package:                              82 votes   =   28,77 %
Wrong singer:                               50 votes   =   17,54 %
Wrong song:                                 36 votes   =   12,63 %
Bad stage performance:                       8 votes   =    2,81 %
Neighbour & Diaspora Voting:                73 votes   =   25,61 %
A combination of all above points:          29 votes   =   10,18 %
None of these reasons:                       7 votes   =    2,46 %

INTERPRETATIONS:

The majority of 58,94 per cent believe that Malta's contribution itself is responsible for the bad results in one way or another, be it the singer, the song or the whole package. In fact, the whole package is made responsible by almost 29 per cent.
Not even 3 per cent point out a bad stage performance, so this is a minor reason.
Neighbour & Diaspora Voting plays a big role according to about a quarter of the voters. The fact that mainly Easter European countries reached the next round strengthens this thesis it seems.

The editor would like to point out, that this poll is not representative for the whole country. However, it gives a clear indication anyway.

This poll clearly shows that the country's contribution itself (song, singer, package) is responsible.
It means that higher standards for the local festival will be necessary in future. Better songs and better singers have to be chosen.
