Have you personally benefited from Malta's EU membership?

Results of 30th November 2006

More than two and a half years have passed since Malta joined the European Union. Since 1st May 2004 Malta is a full EU member state with all priviliges and duties.

What do the Maltese people think about it? And what was the effect on the people? Are the people better off now than before?

Between 12th and 30th November 2006 around 120 people participated in this online poll. Thank you very much!

Here the details:

133 votes were cast in this poll.

Unfortunately, there were 5 people who voted more than one time. The votes of these 5 people had to be made invalid in order to obtain a result which is more honest and true.
So the number of valid votes was 119.

Here the percentages that the various answers got:
Yes:                               50 votes   =   42,02 %
No:                                39 votes   =   32,77 %
I can't say.:                      30 votes   =   16,28 %

INTERPRETATIONS:

A clear majority of voters sees optimistic into the country's future with the EU membership. More than 50% answered that they see the EU membership as a chance or as an opportunity. But there are also thirty per cent who are afraid and see it as a risk or even as a threat. This number is still high and shall be taken seriously by the Maltese politicians, but also by the EU administration. Sixteen per cent see it more with neutral eyes, to them it is both a chance and a risk.

The editor would like to point out, that this poll is not representative for the whole country. However, it gives a clear indication anyway.

The poor participation in this poll shows that the country's EU membership is not a top issue anymore. It is not seen as important as years back. And people have accepted the situation and they have got used to it.
