Do you want more referendums in Malta?

Results of 30th November 2006

Maltese democracy is more than often restricted and reduced to general elections. The last time the Maltese electorate could vote directly about a specific policy was more than three years ago, the referendum about whether the country should join the European Union or not.

There are many other top issues that the Maltese people are concerned about and which they might like to decide about themselves and not leave them to the politicians. The magic word is 'Referendum'.

The question now is whether the Maltese people want more referendums or not? Or do they want to leave all the big decisions up to the politicians only?

Between 12th and 30th November 2006 almost 300 people participated in this online poll. Thank you very much!

Here the details:

303 votes were cast in this poll.

Unfortunately, there were 10 people who voted more than one time. The votes of these 10 people had to be made invalid in order to obtain a result which is more honest and true.
So the number of valid votes was 286.

Here the percentages that the various answers got:
Yes:                              221 votes   =   77,27 %
No:                                23 votes   =    8,04 %
I don't care.:                     42 votes   =   14,69 %

INTERPRETATIONS:

The result is self-explanatory. A clear majority, more than three quarters want more influence in politics through more referendums. They do not want to leave all up to the politicians. Maybe they don't trust their representatives in parliament enough to tackle all the big issues well.

The editor would like to point out, that this poll is not representative for the whole country. However, it gives a clear indication anyway.

The poor participation in this poll shows that the country's EU membership is not a top issue anymore. It is not seen as important as years back. And people have accepted the situation and they have got used to it.
