Which measures would help to boost up Malta's Tourism Industry again?

Results of 31st August 2006

A topic which was brought up by the tourism authorities in Malta is the problem of decreasing tourists? New hotels are being built, the capacities of hotel rooms and infrastructure for tourists have never been higher. But the number of tourists doesn't want to increase. What are the reasons and what can be done about it? Which measures would help to boost up Malta's Tourism Industry?

Between 10th and 24th August 2006 well over 300 people participated in this online poll. Thank you very much!

Here the details:

380 votes were cast in this poll.

Unfortunately, there were 22 people who voted more than one time. The votes of these 22 people had to be made invalid in order to obtain a result which is more honest and true.
So the number of valid votes was 320.

Here the percentages that the various answers got:
Remove subsidies to allow real competition:   16 votes  =   5,00 %
Allow low cost airlines to operate to Malta: 100 votes  =  31,25 %
Improve in the quality of related services:   54 votes  =  16,86 %
Do more marketing abroad:                     22 votes  =   6,88 %
All of the above points together:            111 votes  =  34,69 %
Other measures (voters' suggestions below):   17 votes  =   5,32 %

INTERPRETATIONS:

The people have ideas and many suggestions to boost up the country's tourism industry. A number of emails with recommendations were received, many thanks. Out of the given options two suggestions got votes than all the others together. It is highly demanded that low cost airlines are given the chance to operate to/from Malta and so bring more tourists to the islands. But at the same time the quality of services in the tourism sector has to improve. The removal of subsidies and marketing abroad is not seen to be so critical.

The editor wants to thank all those voters who have sent emails with their suggestions. Please find a few of them here:

Lino Attard:
>>Tourism is failing because the Maltese people killed it. Government is
sustaining the tourism industry through the taxes you and I pay but the Maltese
are stupid. They have no civic pride and do not care to keep the county clean.
The hotels, catering establishments, taxis, busses and various shops including
the kiosks scattered all over the island are robbing the tourist. Who wants to
come Malta under these conditions. We killed the golden goose and with a big
toung in cheek blame the Minister for Tourism and the Government.
MHRA is creating a fuss because they claim Government is not doing enough to
attract tourists. Why don't they invest to educate the people? They had it
good for too long time. Now they expect Government to invest in tourism for
them to survive! If they want to increase their business and profits by
bringing customers to their doors let them invest their own money in marketing.
<<

Leli Pace:
>>Change of people in charge of tourism. Start with a change from the top.<<

The editor would like to point out, that this poll is not representative for the whole country. However, it gives a clear indication anyway.

The Problem of decreasing tourists can be solved
. Malta has a high potential to develop further in the sector of tourism. Its cultural heritage, its typical Mediterranean climate and its friendly people shall give further impulses on a wealthy tourism industry.
