What do you think are the main reasons for traffic accidents in Malta?

Often we have to read about traffic accidents on Maltese roads, too often they are fatal. The number of people getting killed or injured on the roads is too high.

What are the reasons for this? What are the main reasons?

Between 15th and 31st December 2006 almost 200 people participated in this online poll. Thank you very much!

Here the details:

200 votes were cast in this poll.
Unfortunately, there were 3 people who voted more than one time. The votes of these 3 people had to be made invalid in order to obtain a result which is more honest and true.
So the number of valid votes was 194.

Here the percentages that the various answers got:

Overspeeding:                     102 votes   =   52,58 %
Alcohol / Drugs:                   25 votes   =   12,89 %
Falling asleep:                     2 votes   =    1,03 %
Traffic Vandalism:                 55 votes   =   28,35 %
Car in bad conditions:             10 votes   =    5,15 %

INTERPRETATIONS:

More that half of all questioned people believe that overspeeding is the main reasons for the traffic accidents on maltese roads. And almost thirty per cent favourise traffic vandalism for their answer. Those are frightening statements. The huge majority so sees lack of discipline on the road.

The editor would like to point out, that this poll is not representative for the whole country. However, it gives a clear indication anyway.

This poll and its results are clear! Urgent action is needed. More enforcement on the road and a better traffic education shall be considered by the authorities!
